Image Manipulation :

Images can be cleaned up in Photoshop using adjustment layers. Once an adjustment layer is created, it can be turned on and off to view the changes resulting from the adjustment. Dust spots on slides that are digitally reproduced can be removed with the Rubber Stamp tool.

1. Open heike.PSD from the tutorial images you downloaded (see: Download)

2. Use the Rubber Stamp tool to remove the dust spots in the sky.

Windows

After clicking on the tool, place the cursor over a color on the image that you would like the dust spot to change into, and while pressing the ALT key (note that the shape of the cursor changes with this action) click once. Now place the cursor over the dust spot and click.

Macintosh
After clicking on the tool, place the cursor over a color on the image that you would like the dust spot to change into, and while pressing the OPTION key (note that the shape of the cursor changes with this action) click once. Now place the cursor over the dust spot and click.

3. Use the Blur tool to remove the hair on the mountains. You have to press the mouse button down while performing the action. It will take several swipes over the hair to clear it.

4. Use the Dodge tool to lighten up areas. To darken other areas press ALT key (option key-Mac), to transform the dodge tool into a Burn tool - to darken areas. .
5. Use a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer to brighten up the image. Toggle this layer between visible and invisible to see its effect.

Click on the play button in the Layers/Channels/Paths Window and choose New Adjustment Layer. Adjust the contrast settings for the layer and save it. Click on the eye to make this layer visble or invisible.

This method is preferable to dodging and burning because it is easier to undo (simply throw away the layer). Painting black on an adjustment layer creates a mask with reduces the adjustment layers effect.

Try some of the other Adjustment layer options.
