Introduction to Networks

Once a website is created, it is stored on a computer called a server, that is configured to serve web pages via the internet/intranet. It is good practice to create a website on your own computer first and then to upload (send) it to the server via file sharing or FTP (file transfer protocol). To copy your files to a server via file sharing, you must log onto the server using the Chooser (on a Mac) or Network Neighbourhood (on a PC).

1. Create a directory/folder for your website.
2. Within that directory/folder, create another directory/folder called images.
3. To access the web server:
a. For class websites, double-click the Network Neighborhood icon. Select Serval (if it does not appear double-click Entire Network and then double-click on NetWare Servers).
b. For personal websites, right click on the Network Neighborhood icon. Chose Map Network Drive and type "\\midd-unix\yourusername" in the path and in the Connect as box.
4. Navigate to the public_html folder of your class folder/directory on Serval or on midd-unix
5. Copy the website folder you created above into the public_html folder in your class folder.
